WaterTOP Virtual Conference, 22 Feb 2024

The WaterTOP Virtual Conference “Water taste & odor (T&O) – Challenges and research advances”, was organized by the Core Group on 22 Feb 2024. It included 15 presentations, 3 Invited Speakers (Andrea Dietrich, Tsair-Fuh Lina and Arash Zamyadi) and 2 Q&A-discussion sessions.
Attendance was beyond expectations, reaching 280 registrations and 221 online participants from 33 countries. According to participants’ testimonials, this was the largest audience ever for an event dedicated to water taste & odor. There was a strong participation of end users (27% from water supplies-water utilities, 22% water authorities) in addition to researchers and academics.

Method Standardization Meeting,14-17 February 2024, Palermo.
A meeting dedicated to standardization of methods for detection of water taste & odor was organized by Prof. Gianluca Li Puma of the Engineering Department of the University of Palermo. Meeting participants assessed the current state of sensory and chemical methods for water T&O and prepared a white paper with recommendations for future activities related to standardization (available in the “Products” page).

Core Group Meeting, 17-19 Jan 2024, Prague
The Core Group meeting was organized by Dr. František Kožíšek of the National Public Health Institute (SZU) in Prague. The meeting addressed the various tasks towards completion of WaterTOP deliverables. It also planned for the organization of the final WaterTOP Conference than will take place on 22 February 2024.

Editorial meeting: Consumers’ info poster. Sofia, Bulgaria, 13-15 Dec 2023
An editorial meeting for the development of a consumers info poster on water T&O was held in Sofia, on 13-15 December 2023. The meeting was organized by Prof. Galina Dimova of the Bulgarian Water Association (BWA). During the meeting, a tour of Sofia’s water supplies (Sofiyska Voda – Veolia) was organized by Margita Aleksova.

Training School (hybrid): Risk Assessment approaches for water T&O. Rome + virtual, 16-18 October 2023
The hybrid Training School “Risk assessment approaches for water taste & odor” will took place on 16-18 October. The school is organized by Dr. Emanuela Testai, Maura Manganelli and Simona Scardala of the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS) in Rome.

The theoretical morning sessions (10:00-13:00 Rome, CEST) were also available via Zoom and live stream in YouTube.

Training School “Microextraction in T&O analysis: fundamentals & applications”, 20-22 Sep 2023, Chania, Greece.

The Training School on Microextraction for T&O analysis was organized by Prof. Elia Psillakis, at the School of Chemical & Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Crete. Twenty trainees from 15 organizations (12 countries) participated in the school. Training included fundamentals of microextraction techniques (theory) and hands-on laboratory work.
Core Group meeting, 22-23 June 2023, Nicosia, Cyprus
A Core Group meeting was held in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 22-23 June 2023. The meeting aimed in reviewing the progress of WaterTOP and to plan for the completion of products and outcomes.
The meeting was organized by Popi Karaolia of the Nireas-International Water Research Center and the University of Cyprus. The meeting took place in the Library of the Univ. of Cyprus.

Dissemination of WaterTOP at the Bled Water Forum, Slovenia
WaterTOP participated in the Bled Water Forum, a non-profit organisation aiming to promote the development and understanding of quality drinking water around the world, co-create new global trends in water security and versatility.
Tri Kaloudis briefly presented the activities of WaterTOP and participated in a panel focused on the new EU Drinking Water Directive and specifically on the sensory quality of drinking water.
The event took place on 9 June in Bled, Slovenia (Tri Kaloudis participated remotely).

Integration of Taste & Odor in Water Safety Plans, 11-12 May 2023, Luqa, Malta.
A meeting was organized with the aim to produce a guideline for integration of T&O in Water Safety Plans. A peer-reviewed publication is planned on this topic. The meeting was organized by David Spiteri and Ramon Zammit of the Water Services Corporation in Malta.

“AOPs for treatment of water T&O” – Editorial meeting, 27-28 April 2023, Belgrade.
An Editorial meeting for the preparation of a review paper on “AOPs for treatment of water T&O” was organized by Maja Djolic and Milica Stoikovic in The Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy (FTM-UB), University of Belgrade.

“Water T&O Database & TOW” meeting, 23-24 March 2023, Freising
A meeting was held in Freising, Germany to finalize the development of the Water T&O database and the visualization of the Taste & Odor Wheel. The meeting was hosted in LSB-TUM by Martin Steinhaus, Andreas Dunkel and Guangjuan Luo.

Presentation of WaterTOP at the ProVoda Conference, Zagreb
WaterTOP was presented at the final Conference of the ProVoda project, on 21 March 2023 in Zagreb. The Conference was organized by the Water Supply Department, Croatian Institute of Public Health (Magdalena Ujević Bošnjak, Livia Kurajica, Jurica Štiglić, Krunoslav Capak, Pavle Jeličić).

The meeting aimed to design the Water T&O Database, a deliverable of WaterTOP. Martin Steinhaus and Andreas Dunkel (LSB-TUM) presented the related databases of LSB and a first draft prototype of the Water T&O Database was developed.

WaterTOP Kick-off meeting in Brussels. In this MC meeting, the key leadership roles were decided (Chairs, WG leaders, Grant Holder, Science Communications Manager and STSM managers). A draft work plan and budget was agreed for the 1st Grant period (28/8/19 – 30/4/20).
